Sunday morning was pretty low key waiting for round two scheduled at 11 a.m.

Jack Harris showed off his swap meet find - a copy of a 1967 Hot Rod magazine that did a feature on his first race car which was also a NHRA national record holder. The Harris & Saengler B/Street Roadster set the record at 11.30 on just its third outing.

Sunday - Round Two

11:51 a.m. Following the pre race ceremonies, the second round of Top Fuel kicked off under another sunny sky. Harris needed to win this round to take the Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series Top Fuel championship away from Rick White.

The championship hinged on Harris getting around Brad Thompson who had problems of his own in round one.

After his burnout Harris backed up without rushing trying to build engine heat.

By the time Harris got back to the line Thompson had finished his burnout and was ready to stage maybe trying to rush Harris' routine.

Not to be rushed, the final adjustments were made to the engine.

Thompson put his first stage light on before Harris' data computer was activated.

When both cars were finally in Thompson left first.

Thompson hazed the tires early and lost his starting line advantage by the 60' clocks.

Harris still had the lead at the 330' mark but Thompson had picked up some ground.

Harris got into some tire slippage of his own and lost the lead by the 660' block.

Coming up on the 1000' blocks Thompson still had the lead until he ran out of fuel which did very bad things to his engine.

Harris maintained traction and passed the wounded Thompson with about 100' to spare. It was another ugly win but in the record books it will reflect it won him the 2009 Top Fuel championship. His 6.519 at 200.57 was just good enough to advance to the semi finals.

Back in the pits things got a little tense when the Thompson crew accused Harris of taking to long to stage which resulted in their engine damage and loss. In spite of what either driver did it was the job of the starter to shut down a car that is intentionally taking to much time to stage which he obviously did not.

Cami Beck is still on the mend from her serious golf cart wreck in August. Her spirits are good and she promises to be back in her role as "Jungle Cami" at the March Meet. Next to her is a not so well Kaden Harris.

Sunday - Eliminations - Semi Finals

2:50 p.m. As the final four rolled out of the lanes the show was on schedule. That would change.

Aside from their 5.80 quaifying rip the Nitro Thunder team had not had a sterling weekend. But going into their semi-final match up with Troy Green all that was overshadowed by the fact they had defied all odds and were officially the 2009 champs.

Green had a slight advantage at the hit and both cars moved hard.

Just as Harris starting smoking the tires the filter off his clutch vent came off. In hind sight some people thought this was something else and that it caused what followed. Not so.

Early on this looked to be a classic drag race until Harris broke an exhaust rocker stand which caused an ugly chain of events. The broken rocker caused a chunk of piston to lodge under an intake valve which banged the blower. The blower burst panel did its job but when it blew out it caught and crimped the main oil line from the dry sump system. This caused instant back pressure which blew the filter off. The really ugly part was the massive oil down from the 400' mark to the turn off road.

Shot an instant after the blower banged (belt gone)... Harris had not yet closed the throttle.

With Harris dead in the water Green never missed a beat and went on to clock a sterling 5.879 at just 226.35.

Not the way the Nitro Thunder team wanted to end the season.

However, the day was not done. There was still the presentation of the NHRA "Wally" to Brett Harris and the Jack Harris Racing - Nitro Thunder team - for miraculously winning the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series Top Fuel Championship by a mere nine points.
